Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest particular decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
