The global fast-food chain has pulled a holiday advert produced with AI after encountering considerable criticism on social media.
The brief film was produced with the help of generative AI clips and was originally released publicly for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.
Shortly after its release, commenters denounced the implementation of AI in the advert. Several labeled it "disturbing" and "jarringly assembled".
"This experience is an important learning as we explore the proper utilization of Artificial Intelligence," stated a spokesperson from McDonald's Netherlands.
The commercial was created for the brand by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It depicted various situations that can go wrong during the Christmas break, with the tagline "not the most wonderful time of the year".
Commercials that feature AI-created content have become a rising phenomenon among large brands, notably for the holiday period.
Following the ad being taken down, a producer's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the advert.
According to her, the development required "over a month and a half" and involved creating "thousands of takes" which were then shaped afterward "just as we would on any traditional production".
"This was not an AI trick," Bridge asserted. "It was a proper commercial."
While the McDonald's commercial was largely criticized, the sentiment for some AI-assisted holiday ads has been more mixed.
For instance, a consecutive AI-generated holiday ad from another major brand according to analysis received a significant "positive sentiment rating" from viewers.
However, various brands have also faced criticism for employing AI in advertising. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that critics described as "cheap" and "disturbing".
The episode highlights the continuing conversation within the marketing and creative industries about the balance between AI efficiency and human craftsmanship.
