The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
