Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of former President Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the redaction procedure.
While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the extensive redactions raise serious questions about the information may be concealed beneath them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release grossly does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he added.
But, some rightwing pundits and former President allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
Yet some are not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, allowed some rightwing voices to launch the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these documents for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response added.
However, broader comment on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud demands for action that came before the legislative approval to enact a bill requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were provided hard-copy binders of materials that included no previously unseen data.
