It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc concludes, the anime will take a three-month break until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.
From now on, One Piece will release two seasons every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.
The One Piece anime had a six-month pause that began in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and allow the comic to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to deliver fans with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.
Although some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series adapting one chapter, with some instead handling one and a half chapters or more to compensate for scheduling.
This concludes of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally itself have numerous side stories, and the quality of the art can change drastically between one episode and the next. Today, series creation is structured in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
