Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
