Lifetime of Salary Insufficient for UK Workers to Join Richest 10%, Report Says

According to new research, the typical worker in the UK would have to work half a century of salary to attain the net worth of the richest 10% nationwide.

Expanding Wealth Gap Through the Years

The study analyzed net worth statistics including the recent health crisis years and discovered that in the mid-2000s, it would have taken 38 years' worth of median full-time earnings to enter the top 10th of the wealth distribution.

A research lead involved with the analysis observed: "Financial divides in Britain are currently so significant that a typical full-time employee setting aside their entire income during their working years would continue to be incapable to reach the top of the financial hierarchy."

Quantifying the Wealth Divide

The study discovered that the difference between the assets of the median citizen and a person belonging to the richest segment was one million pounds in 2006-08, but had increased to 1.3 million pounds in actual value by the pandemic years.

The researcher further stated: "These differences are doubly concerning as wealth mobility in Britain is restricted – people that start life wealthy tend to continue being rich, and the opposite holds true."

Comparative Financial Divide

Despite the economic divide expanding in absolute terms, the percentage of overall assets in the UK possessed by the most affluent homes – known as "relative wealth inequality" – has been "broadly stable since the 1980s," per the research.

Over this timeframe, complete net worth in the UK increased dramatically from triple the gross domestic product, to nearly seven and a half times.

Drivers of Financial Divide

Referred to as "unearned" appreciation, through growing real estate costs and adjustments to retirement fund assessments, were the primary factors of the expanding economic divide since 2010, per the analysis.

These gains tended to accrue to older, property-owning households, the research shows – intensifying the age-based economic gap.

Intergenerational Financial Divides

The median economic difference between individuals aged 30-34 and those in their early 60s grew by more than 100% in real terms, from £135,000 in 2006-08, to £310k.

Geographic Disparities

Additionally, there were significant regional variations, with the average level of wealth in 2020-22 amounting to 290 thousand pounds in south-east England, where housing costs have tended to rise rapidly, versus 110 thousand pounds in the north-east.

Health Crisis Years Impact

Amid the health crisis, when millions of workers were protected by the government-supported job retention program, and health crisis restrictions reduced expenditure possibilities, the statistics indicate many households were in a position to set aside money, growing their net worth.

Wealthier families achieved superior outcomes, however. "The average household in the poorest fifth saw their available funds increase by just £80 over the pandemic period (across the pandemic timeframe), roughly identical to the two years pre-pandemic. In contrast, the average household in the wealthiest fifth saw their cash reserves rise by £4,200," the analysis concludes.
