The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
